Mysterious and gorgeous sci fi: Inventive and spine tingling

When I first heard the premise for the first issue of Drifter, I yawned. It seemed as though the story would be the repetition of the trite "guy crash lands on a strange planet and struggles to survive" model. Nonetheless, I was curious to pick it up, and did so with a fair degree of curiosity. While we ARE going off the "post crash survival" model of sci fi here, I can firmly say that what Ivan Brandon and Nic Klein are playing around with here
is nonetheless pretty unique in itself. Our protagonist, Abram Pollux, is a rough around the edges character, not really likable, and is struggling to find his way in this new world that appears to have threats at each and every turn he makes. What begins as a pretty straightforward narrative soon takes a turn into landscapes of the surreal, horrific, and at times, utterly confusing. There are several points in this first volume of Drifter in which one cannot entirely tell whether the story being told is taking place in the present or the past. As Pollux tries to figure out the puzzle of how long he's been on Ouro (the planet), why the man who shot him did so, and more, dark shadows from his past begin to creep into the picture, and
in cruel twist of irony, he begins to move farther from the truth the closer he tries to get to it.

This is not an easy story by any means, and one that I would only recommend for those who are highly interested in a creative team that's trying to show you something (relatively) fresh and original in what they're putting together. There is very little character development in this first arc, making readers not overly attached to the characters, but in a paradoxical way this also sucks you right into the story, as the intrigue, and subtle shades of wonder and curiosity only make you want to know more. If you're looking for something straightforward here, to put things bluntly, you're probably better off spending your money elsewhere. If this first arc of Drifter establishes one thing more than anything else, it's that here Ivan Brandon is aiming for a deep, complex mystery that will slowwwly unravel itself over time, with no easy explanations, no blatant hints, and no spoon-feeding that will get readers within glimpse of its resolution. If that sounds like a fun ride to you, then buy this trade NOW. If you love strange, complex, and eerie sci fi (with EXCELLENT art from Nic Klein to boot), you're in for a treat with this one.

I want to love this book. Premise is great. Artwork is fantastic. However, the story and sometimes dialog is disjointed. A one page prologue in the beginning, just to start us off, would have been appreciated. It seems to have gotten better, later in the book. Now, I'm still gonna buy installment 2 when it comes out...hopefully, since I know slightly what's going on now, it will be worth it despite a lack of editorial continuity.

Entirely Derivative

I have to disagree with the reviewer claiming Drifter to be "Very Original." Drifter volume 1 as I see it is an exercise in scraping the top layer of fat off TV Tropes and calling it a day: the rugged amnesiac protagonist, a no-nonsense female sheriff, a camp-ily fanatical preacher (ugh), a mysterious grizzled man and the plucky young girl who is the only one that can get him to open up. The tired Space Western setting is identical to other, superior current series such as Copperhead: a backwater planet where people say "ain't" and not everything is what it seems. Stop me if you've heard this one before.

The art is well done but largely uninspired save for one or two character designs in particular. The panel layout on the other hand is truly baffling, leaving the reader flipping back through pages to figure out what just happened in an apparent attempt to mimic other series that have done this artfully. Characters' actions and turns will have you scratching your head before giving up on looking for their motivations.

I realize this review comes across pretty harsh, and I'm usually not so critical, but Drifter is one of the only trades of the last year that I couldn't wait to be done with. Maybe volume 2 will address some of these issues, but for now my recommendation is to check out East of West, Copperhead, and Storm Dogs instead.

Good book for beginners, but now... It is not for 2013. Has not modern ideas. Must read another radio book.

An incredible aid for the rookie programmer.

This text is a "must read" for any radio station
programmer in the developing world.

The author has a very good grasp of the subject, and delivers his message in a gripping way that makes it difficult to put the book down until you've read it the first time.

As a programmer on a major market station in the Caribbean, this book has reinforced some of my own deep convictions about formats, news, music, and sports in radio programming.

This book is worth every dollar, and will be always close at hand where I can quickly refer to the sections which I've highlighted in neon yellow throughout the book.

Simple advice to start you thinking

This is a great book for beginners. Although some of the information seems a bit like common sense it helps to actual see it written down as advice. This book really gets you thinking about whether or not you are actually analysing what you are doing or just going though the motions. The practical suggestions are great.

Wendy Moore is a writer and journalist who specialized in health and medical topics for more than twenty years. She lives in South London. This 2005 trade paperback has a ‘Contents’, sixteen chapters, ‘Chronology’, ‘Notes’, and an ‘Index’. John Hunter was an innovator and maverick who led surgery out of the Dark Ages. He was a true innovator of medical technique, and outlined sound scientific principles for successful transplants. Hunter’s home was used in Robert Louis Stevenson’s story “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”. Hunter practiced in the late 18th century, he was one of the best-skilled surgeons in London. Hunter often quarreled with other leading practitioners. Hunter gained his experience from dissecting thousands of human bodies. Many of them were obtained illegally. Chapter 2 has the background and history of surgeon Hunter, and the England of the 18th century.

The problems in getting specimens are listed in Chapter 3. The actual practices in dissecting corpses and preserving specimens are listed in Chapter 4. In the 16th century Andreas Vesalius published his illustrated books on human anatomy. Chapter 5 tells of the medical experiments and controversies of Hunter. John Hunter became an Army surgeon during the Seven Years War (Chapter 6). Soldiers who were shot and untreated recovered better than those who had medical treatment (p.94). Hunter became interested in dentistry and transplanted teeth (Chapter 7). Autopsies became popular to analyze causes of death (Chapter 8). Hunter prospered. Venereal infections were common and provided customers for treatment (Chapter 9). Hunter moved to more spacious grounds for his collections (Chapter 10).

Hunter began a series of lectures that were open to medical students and the public (Chapter 11). These hundreds of students influenced future generations (such as Edward Jenner). Hunter dissected electric eels to describe their hundreds of columns of tightly stacked disks. Was is possible to reanimate a dead person (Chapter 12)? Hunter recommended putting air (or oxygen) into the person’s lungs, or electric shocks as a last resort (de-fibrillation). An eight-foot tall man was exhibited as a curiosity (Chapter 13). The changes in scientific belief in the late 18th century are noted in Chapter 15. Like others, Hunter did not believe in the Biblical accounts of earth’s creation. Chapter 16 tells about the last years of Hunter’s life. As surgeon general he changed the policy to reward merit rather than privilege for surgeons. His peers at St. George’s hospital united against him. Hunter’s angina eventually killed him. His belongings were sold to pay his debts, his family was homeless and penniless. Some of Hunter’s manuscripts were deliberately burned by Everard Home, his last associate. Hunter applied the principles of science to surgery, the techniques that are used today.

This is a very interesting book about a little-known surgeon who revolutionized the practice of surgery. One of his students was Edward Jenner, who created the use of vaccination to prevent smallpox. This saved millions of lives, and also led to a great increase in the population of Europe. This in turn generated immigration to the United States and other countries.
