Great overview, but lacks some depth in places

This book was used as the text for a Construction Law case I took in law school. Overall I found the book to be very good. It was clear, concise, well written, and easy to understand. It also brought a pretty wide range of topics into the mix, and provided a fair amount of places to go for additional information (by way of case law). If I had to complain, and for the purposes of this review I will, I would make two comments: 1) There are areas where a little more depth would be nice. Frankly, I don't think the scope of this book really includes in-depth analysis on anything so this might be a non-issue for many folks. I just found that there were a few times (a very few) when I was looking for more information. 2. This book does a really nice job incorporating definitions for new terms into the text. However, there are a LOT of new terms and a glossary would have beeen a nice addition to the text.

Great book for experienced developers

This is a great Java book for experienced developers who wish to learn Java, or for Java developers looking to catch up on Java since 1.5SE. This book covers Java 8 without going into the history of how things used to work in older versions. It also does not waste time explaining in tedious detail how a for loop works or anything like that. This book just covers standard edition features, no enterprise stuff.

If you're new to software development this is not the book for you. If you're looking for Java EE, this is not the book for you.

Excellent intro to Java 8 for developers

I’ve just finished reading Core Java for the Impatient by Cay S. Horstmann. I also own Scala for the Impatient by the same author, and I really loved that book. Having had previous experience with Scala, I was excited to read up on the newer features introduced in Java 8. Maybe it’s because I’m a C# developer professionally, but I’m really impressed with the new Java 8 features.

Horstmann’s books are excellently written for existing developers to quickly become familiar with newer languages and technologies. This book isn’t meant for a beginning programmer to dive right into software development using Java 8, but if you have C#, Java, Scala, or other C-style experience you’ll be set. The pace is excellent and the book flows really well.

While it’s expected that you’re already a proficient programmer, I didn’t get the feeling that it was expected for the reader to understand functional programming. Java 8 introduces a lot of functional style which I’ve seen existing Java developers complain about. I’ve also seen C# developers complain about Java verbosity. While I can’t help people who dislike functional programming, I can say as a C# developer that Java 8 really helps reduce the verbosity of the language.

Before Java 8 you’d have to construct a whole new class that implemented a single method if you wanted to create a Runnable (I have limited experience with pre-Java 8, so forgive me if that’s incorrect). In Java 8, you can assign a runnable to a lambda expression. The compiled code will still contain a one-off class but you as a developer don’t have to worry about those details. This kind of syntactic sugar really makes for more readable and more maintainable code. This is the first material I’ve read which covers Java 8, so I assume Horstmann has covered everything. I actually don’t think Java could have packed anything else into Java 8 that wasn’t covered in this book. It’s hard to believe so much great content was presented in less than 500 pages.

The book is written to appeal to the applications programmer, so Horstmann offers a lot of material such as functional concepts in the Collections and Streams chapters, annotations support, date/time improvements, and internationalization. He doesn’t walk you through creating a parser or an actor system like he does in Scala for the Impatient, but he does give you the necessary information to create a maintainable application in Java. The fact that you’ll learn how to create and process annotations as well as to perform runtime compilation of classes opens a world of possibilities (these sections obviously only touch the surface).

The book also covers Nashorn, a JavaScript REPL that provides access to Java types. I have node.js experience, so this really interests me. I’ll need to investigate the performance implications of running Java code from within this JavaScript environment, but this also opens a lot to an applications developer. For example, if you want to play around with a type in Java’s core library, you can fire up a REPL and instantiate the type rather than going through the rigamarole of creating a throw away project. As a C# developer, I use LinqPad regularly on Windows and Mono’s `csharp` interactive shell on OSX.

Again, I love how concisely the content is delivered. The code that accompanies the book is well structured, allowing the reader to quickly jump between text and the full implementations of the code in the book.

Another thing I enjoyed about this book is how information with short examples are presented in the chapter’s text and exercises are presented at chapter end to give a more hands-on experience. If you skip over the exercises, you’ll still get all of the important material of the chapter.

I would recommend this book to any non-beginner who wants to learn about Java 8.

Great book if you want to master Java 8

I have read the "Core Java" series of books by Cay Horstmann over the years. He is a good author who gets the concepts across clearly and well. So naturally, I got a copy of this book and loved it. I think this book is tailor made for two types of people - one set of people who are learning Java and the other set of people who want to learn more about JDK8 (with lots of new concepts such as Lambda Expressions and Streams).

Chapter 3 deals with Interfaces and Lambda expressions. This is critical for readers getting into JDK8. You can learn all about Lamda Expressions in this chapter.

Chapter 8 is on Streams. This chapter has not been overly helpful in explaining the need and use of Streams. I need to reread it a few times to fully grasp the need for Streams.

Chapter 14 is important because it talks of the new Nashorn Engine included in JDK8. You can learn about running Javascript programs using the JDK.

Chapter 12 introduces the Data and Time API (a new entrant to the JDK). This is important for serious Java programmers given the inefficiencies of the classic Date API that has been in Java since v1.0. There is no more need to use the JODA library for your date time needs. It is all part of the JDK.

About the Author

Pearl S. Berman, PhD, is a licensed psychologist who is a professor of psychology and a clinical supervisor within the doctoral program in psycho­logy at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She received her BA in psychology from Brandeis University in 1977 and her PhD in clinical psychology from Bowling Green State University in 1983. Her areas of clinical and research expertise include child physical and sexual abuse, neglect, spousal violence, violence prevention, and professional training. She is the author of three doctoral-level books. Her first book is titled Therapeutic Exercises for Victimized and Neglected Girls: Applications for Individual, Family, and Group Psychotherapy (Professional Resource Press, 1994). Her second book was the first edition of Case Conceptualization and Treatment Planning: Exercises in Integrating Theory With Clinical Practice (SAGE Publications, 1997); this book was translated into Korean by Hak Ji Sa in 2007. The second edition of this book was published by Sage in 2010. Her third book is Interviewing and Diagnostic Exercises for Clinical and Counseling Skills Building with her colleague Susan Shopland, Psy.D (Lawrence Erlbaum & Associates, 2005). She has also published eight book chapters and eleven professional articles. She has presented 55 professional papers and 13 professional workshops in her areas of expertise. In addition, she has taught 5 undergraduate and 12 doctoral-level courses in psychology. Finally, she is a member of many professional groups working toward the cessation of victimization, including the American Psychological Association, the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, the Association of Women in Psychology, the National Partnership to End Interpersonal Violence, The National Committee to Prevent Elder Abuse, and the Southern Poverty Law Center, and the National Organization for Women.

Really wish I had started my program with this book instead of being assigned it at the end. It's a really great way to see how other clinicians view clients in the field. Obviously, everyone has their own preferences, so you won't agree with the way everyone does their different styles, but it's important to know why and how they do it.

Great fast read

Although I did not learn anything that has not already been on TV and online I came away with a greater appreciation of what the life was about. I only wish that we could hear about his life now such as U.S. His family sti in contact with him. Does he have communication with the child that was young that he wanted to be close to and also is there any way that he will ever be off if 23 hour lockdown. Lord knows that that could literally drive a person crazy and no person should be punished in that way.
will there be any more books about pistol Pete or is he faded into oblivion since he is locked away. I would have like to hear from anyone that does have contact with him.

My heart be still

As four recipes from this book bubble away, on my stove, I can say I'm loving this book. I'm tempted to give this book a one star, in hopes of keeping the secret to myself, but it would be unfair to its amazing author. I received a copy of the French edition a year ago, and have spent agonizing hours on google translate re-writing the recipes. This English version (with pictures!) is a god-sent. Love it, and thank you Lourdes :)

Great Indian/French fusion cook book that's a must have!

We all come across many Indian cook books but this is one of a kind! The author has stayed true to tradition and is authentic Pondicherry cuisine. The dish names are what the locals call in Tamil/French. The recipes are simple and easy to follow. They brought home memories growing up in my home town,Pondicherry. A must have in my opinion. Nice gift to your friends and family for any occasion!

About the Author

Bonnie L. Yegidis, Ph. D., MSW     Bonnie Yegidis is Professor and Director of the School of Social Work at the University of South Florida, Tampa.  She teaches in the research methods and social work practice sequences in the School, and has conducted research on family violence,  cross-cultural issues in social work practice, and evidence based social work practice.  Dr. Yegidis earned her MSW degree from West Virginia University and her Ph. D. in Curriculum and Instruction, with a concentration in Measurement and Evaluation, from the University of South Florida.  She is the recipient of a number of awards and honors including Social Worker of the Year from the Georgia Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, and the Distinguished Alum Award from West Virginia University. 

Robert  W. Weinbach, Ph.D., MSW.     Bob Weinbach is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of South Carolina, where he continues to teach graduate level research courses in the College of Social Work. He is also the first author of Statistics for Social Workers, Eighth Edition; The Social Worker as Manager, Sixth Edition;  and is the author of Evaluating Social Work Services and Programs (all published by Allyn & Bacon), as well as over 75 other  publications and invited book chapters. He earned graduate degrees in social work from SUNY-Buffalo and Ohio State University and has worked in both medical and psychiatric social work practice and as a program evaluator.

 

Laura L. Myers, Ph.D., M.S.W.     Laura Myers is an Associate Professor and BSW Program Director at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in Tallahassee, FL.  Laura received a Bachelor of Arts in Religion and Philosophy and completed her coursework and Master’s thesis in Computer Science and Statistics from the University of Southern Mississippi.  After several years of computer consulting for accounting firms, she returned to school to complete her M.S.W. and Ph.D. in Social Work at the University of Georgia.  Laura lives in Tallahassee with her husband, Dr. Bruce Thyer, and their four children, John, William, Joseph, and Cynthia.   Laura is interested in research, scholarly writing, human diversity and social discrimination, eating disorders, and social work and spirituality.

About the Author
Klaus Solberg Søilen is an Associate Professor at Halmstad University, Sweden. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Intelligence Studies in Business (JISIB) and Senior Editor of the International Journal of Innovation Science (IJIS). He has published half a dozen books and numerous scientific articles for journals like Journal of Business Research, European Business Review and Knowledge Organization. Prior to his academic career he worked for ten years in industry, the last three being at KPMG Oslo. He is often invited as a speaker at different professional events and also a consultant to respected organisations.

About the Author
Rick Billstein is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Montana. He has worked in mathematics teacher education at this university for 40 years and his current research is in the areas of curriculum development and mathematics teacher education. He teaches courses for future teachers in the Mathematics Department and also is the site director for the "Show-Me Project," an NSF-funded project supporting the dissemination and implementation of standards-based middle grades mathematics curricula. He worked on an NSF grant called "Tinker Plots" to develop new data analysis software and he serves on the Advisory Boards for several other national projects. From 1992-1997, he directed the NSF-funded "Six Through Eight Mathematics" (STEM) middle school mathematics curriculum project and is now directing the "Middle Grades" MATH"Thematics Phase II Project. "Dr. Billstein has co-authored 24 books, including eight editions of" A Problem Solving Approach to Mathematics for Elementary Teachers," He typically does about 25 regional and national presentations per year and has traveled to Thailand to work with the international schools there. He has also presented at the International Conferences on Mathematics Education (ICME). Shlomo Libeskind is a professor in the mathematics department at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. He is responsible for the "pre-college" teaching major in the department and has continuously been teaching and advising preservice and inservice teachers. Dr. Libeskind has extensive writing experience (books, articles, and workshop materials) as well as experience in directing mathematics education projects. Libeskind is an active member of Oregon MathematicsCouncil (OMEC) and has been involved in reviewing materials for the state of Oregon's standards for college admission. Johnny W. Lott began his teaching career in the public schools of DeKalb County, Georgia, outside Atlanta. There he taught mathematics in grades 8-12. He also taught one year at the Westminster Schools, grades 9-12, and one year in the Pelican, Alaska, school, grades 6-12. In addition, he has taught in grade schools in Montana while at The University of Montana. Johnny has been co-author of several books and has written numerous articles and other essays in the "Arithmetic Teacher," "Teaching Children Mathematics," "The Mathematics Teacher," "School Science and Mathematics," "Student Math Notes," and "Mathematics Education Dialogues." He has been the Project Manager for the "Figure This!" publications and website developed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and was project co-director of the State Systemic Initiative for Montana Mathematics and Science (SIMMS) Project. He has served on many NCTM committees, has been a member of its Board of Directors, and was its president from April 2002-April 2004. In the Department of Mathematical Sciences at The University of Montana, Dr. Lott was a full professor and served as department chair. He is currently the Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at the University. His doctorate is in mathematics education from Georgia State University.
