I could see Bruce Wayne obsessing over this book....

This isn't the type of book that I usually read- but I found it immensely interesting. It deals with night fighters throughout history, from the Moshuk Nanren (China), to the Hashishins (Islam), and Ulfhedrin (Norse.) There is a fair amount of philosophical and spiritual information included with the nuts and bolts of how to move unseen and neutralize defenses- and opponents.

I suppose that this book feeds my dark side, but it provides the kind of information that outsiders and underdogs (i.e. freedom fighters) need to strike back. Indeed, the Ninja (Shinobi) struck back at the injustices of the Samuri and their lords. The Ninja were considered to be descended from Tengu- half man/ half crow demons. They were said to be forest magicians with supernatural powers.

I could imagine Bruce Wayne obsessing over this book....

A good reference for this topic....

This is the first book I've read by this author but not the first book of this kind I've read. I found Knights of Darkness to be quite engaging. The historical aspects of the book are quite good without being annoying. The author provides a healthy dose of history without making it a history book. Likewise, he provides a great deal of practical (or should I say "tactical"?) information which I found to be useful to someone in those kinds of endeavors. Along with this information, he also gives historical proof of it's effectiveness.
I was especially impressed by the section on developing your senses, as this is not the first time I've read this type of information. Several other books I've read mention the necessity, and advantage, of developing your senses. I am personally taking this to heart. After all, having better developed senses should benefit in all areas of life.
Mention has been made of the simplicity of this book. In defense of the author, the majority of people write on a third-grade level and read on a level not much higher. In an effort to reach the majority of readers, an author shouldn't write on a level challenging to college students. "Write simple, write for the masses."
I was also impressed with the author's inclusion of criminal organizations. Many authors would find including criminals as a "good example" to be distasteful. However, criminal organizations often use methods to achieve their goals which are wholly applicable to the topic of the book. As the author states, "If a tactic, technique, or training method works, use it, no matter what its origins. In other words, whatever gets you through the night."
In conclusion, I found this to be a very interesting and informative book. I would recommend it to anyone seeking information in this field.

Bloody good read

A real warts-and-all diary and look inside the film industry. Beresford doesn't hold anything back here. The tortuous path to getting a film made is recounted many times as various projects are on, off, then on again over the course of a few years. It offers a fascinating insight into the film industry as a whole and the Australian film industry in particular. And backs up the saying that you've only accomplished something in the film industry when you can speak about it in the past tense.

Aside from Hartnett, there are plenty of other big names who come in for a mention. Some come out of it well, others not so well. I knocked this over in a day and was left wishing it went on further.

And for the record, I'm no latte-sipping leftie. Nor do you have to be to enjoy this book. After all, along with Driving Miss Daisy and Tender Mercies, this is the bloke who directed the Barry McKenzie movies, The Club and Double Jeopardy. He's hardly all highbrow and mighty.

Boring and Without Context For Your Average Film Buff

To say this this is a memoir is very misleading. It's really a compilation of bland diary entries from Beresford during the period before he directed The Contract with John Cusak and Morgan Freeman. The book swings from a laundry list of industry names that you wouldn't recognize unless you worked in the industry to condescending explanations that anyone who picked up this to read would be offended by. Who doesn't know Oscar voters get free dvds to watch? The truth is very few actors or other name directors are mentioned. There's no juicy stories other than this actor passed on a role, this actor can't make up his mind, this actor wants script changes. If you are looking for a tell-all, like I've seen this book described, don't bother. Also, don't bother if you aren't Australian or are familiar with Aussie film and culture. There are countless tv, film, theater, and celebrity references that the majority of Americans just won't get. Yes you can read past them but what's the point if you miss the touchstones. Alot of the book is Beresford's opinions on films and theater he saw during this period. If I learned anything from the diary it's that if Beresford hated a film, I at least liked it if not loved it, and vice versa.

To be frank I cannot see anyone, unless you are a diehard Beresford fan, taking the time to sit down and read each page thoroughly and completely. I skimmed each page waiting and hoping for an interesting story about anything and I never got one. And if you are curious about the title I will save you the trouble of buying the book. Beresford has a meeting with an excited and talkative Hartnett about doing a Chet Baker biopic. Months later after Beresford has finished a script he finds out Hartnett wants to do the movie, with someone else's script and only if Beresford does not direct. This kind of thing happens every day in Hollywood. Not nearly exciting enough to wade through over 300 pages to find out.

Not the best of its type

These extracts from Bruce Beresfords diary cover a period in the mid 2000s were he is trying to raise interest in a movie, almost any movie it seems. Most of the movies mentioned ended made by somebody else. Disapointingly there is only one day of filming included in the diary entries. I found the epilogue more interesting as told a bit about the filming of The Contract.

The diary entries do display some interesting personality quirks, for one Beresford seems obsessed about the price of meals, especially expensive ones where sonebody else is picking up the tab.

I did find some humorous moments, and I sure a proper memoir written with the reader in mind by Beresford would be worth reading. For a good example see Richard E. Grant's book about making the movie Wa Wa

Have a Taste of Honey

A Taste of Honey is a well-researched manual for the benefit of the novice and the somewhat knowledgeable on delicate matters. Its Author, Habeeb Akande, is an Historian and an Erotologist.
So what is Erotology? Erotology is the study and description of sexual love and lovemaking. I have to define it because I have been asked before what it meant. Therefore, it’s not a well-known word. Early Muslim Erotologists date back to the 9th century according to the book. From Akande’s researches, we see that fictitious sex stories aren’t new for the people that keep insisting that fiction is bidat in Islam. Early Erotologists had stories about sex and included all gender orientations but to not encourage readers in matters strictly forbidden by Sacred Law. It was rather for moral and educational purposes.
In the introduction of the book, Akande quoted Tunisian sociologist Abdelwahab Bouhdiba who said in his book Sexuality in Islam, “It is a pious duty for a good Muslim to help all other members of the Ummah (Muslim community) to become aware of the art of pleasure, to use it consciously, to benefit from it, in a word, to assume their bodies. The techniques of sexual pleasure must be widely spread among the faithful so that the community of Allah does not suffer depression or sorrow. Being a Muslim means knowing how to be happy and cheerful and to know that Allah’s purpose is achieved through the beautiful, not through the ugly, through pleasure, not through contrition.”
That right there is everything because it helps be me even more confident about the path of work I have chosen myself; raise awareness on sexual education in the ummah. Had I read Akande’s book four years ago, I might have not been an anonymous writer after all. So no offense to non-Muslims but the Victorian era is what brought prudery and taboo concepts to Islam. And Habeeb Akande touches on that too. And for the record, haya (modesty) is one thing and prudery is another.
Now, where do I start to tell you about this intriguing book? For a start, it’s a tease because impatience gets the best of you because you want to get to the juicy part; ‘action’ tips. Well, at least for me it was nail-biting. The book is divided in two parts; part one deals with definitions and sexual ethics whilst part two is where it really picks up. While I was tempted to skim and skip some parts, I didn’t. When it comes to matters that I’m very interested in, I make sure to read every line of the book for fear to miss an important detail. As a matter of fact, I read this book from cover to cover and wrote notes all over it! It’s a thing I picked with my step mother the thorough physician who instilled in me sexual education alhamdullilah.
Habeeb Akande’s book was very intriguing from the first page to the last page masha’Allah. I have always known that intimacy was divine based on just the tidbits of Quranic and the Sunnah sources I came across. The Sahabas were not afraid to ask about ‘honey’. Akande touches on many issues I bring up in my fiction stories; skin color, faith, love, carnal love, etc.
To continue, A Taste of Honey has a lot scriptures, hadiths, African proverbs, verses of poems and anecdotes. While many of scriptures weren’t new to me, the rest of the groups were refreshing and jaw dropping. Indeed, we could say that some were crude, a little raunchy, and very funny. In other words, the classical Arabs didn’t mince their words and it’s very exhilarating to read their truthful words. I mean, sometimes you just can’t sanitize certain things. You just have to say them how it is and they did!
Drawing from both secular and religious sources, at times A Taste of Honey feels like a compilation but where Islamic sources are lacking to prove his point, Habeeb Akande fills in with an expert knowledge in the matter of lovemaking. In my opinion, A Taste of Honey is mainly geared towards men and their need to be better men to women even if it also addresses both men and women in some parts. The book also re-hatched the much discussed subject of who between men and women have the strongest sexual drive. Furthermore, it brings up differences and nuances on certain concepts. For instance, why female pleasure insatiability is different from the actual female sex drive. To get your answer or draw your own conclusions, you will have to read to find out because I personally found some subjects open to discussions.
By now, if anybody thinks that Islam is a prude religion is making a big mistake. The Prophet (sallallahu aleihi wassalam), his Sahabas (may Allah be pleased with them), early Arabs, and the Ummah across the board were and is a loving and sexually enlightened people. In this light, A Taste of Honey is a must read. A revival is already in motion and we need to keep it up.
To end, sex is not dirty. Au contraire, it elevates the soul. Keeping it lovely, simple and enjoyable within halal boundaries is the key and what you should take away from A Taste of Honey.

Mandy De Sandra is excellent at writing sex scenes, and hilarious quotes. Kim Davis is almost a sympathetic character in this...almost. By the end, I did feel a little bad for her.

And all of the canyon's colorful characters - rock stars, hippies, murderers, and politicos - happily coexisted alongside a covert military installation.

Let's begin with the obvious: Gram Parsons was far from being the biggest star to emerge from the Laurel Canyon scene. In his short lifetime, he failed to achieve any significant level of commercial success. None of his albums, whether recorded solo or with the International Submarine Band, the Byrds, or the Flying Burrito Brothers, climbed very high on the sales charts. But to many fans and musicians alike, he is considered a hugely influential and tragically overlooked figure.

It is safe to say that Parsons does not have nearly the number of fans that David Crosby or Frank Zappa have, and compared to contemporaries who died during the same era and at roughly the same age-legendary artists like Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix-Parsons is all but unknown. His life story, nevertheless, is a fascinating one, primarily because it contains all the classic Laurel Canyon elements: the royal bloodlines, the not-so-well-hidden intelligence connections, the occult overtones, the extravagantly wealthy family background, an incinerated house or two, and, of course, a whole lot of curious deaths.

We begin back about 1,000 years ago, with Ferdinand the Great, the first King of Castille on the Iberian Peninsula. It is to him that the wealthy Connor family claims their family lineage can be traced. Also in the family tree was King Edward II of England, son of Edward I and Eleanor of Castille. According to some sources, Eddie II was murdered by having a red-hot iron rod shoved up his rectum, though most of his loyal subjects probably didn't shed many tears for the hated ruler. Bringing the royal bloodline to America was one Colonel George Reade, born in the UK in 1608 and married in Yorktown, Pennsylvania, sometime thereafter.

Reade's offspring would ultimately spawn Ingram Cecil Connor, Jr., a well-to-do gent who settled in Columbia, Tennessee. Like his father before him, Cecil attended Columbia Military Academy. In May 1940, at the outset of WWII, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force as a Second Lieutenant. In March of 1941, Cecil, who during the war would become known as "Coon Dog” (though no one seems to remember why), was shipped off to Hawaii. Nine months later, Pearl Harbor came under attack by Japanese bombers.

Rock 'n' Roll, the CIA, Psy-ops, and the engineered hippie culture... Awesome.

Dave McGowan is a writer whose credibility is stamped on every page. I have all of Dave's previous books, too. In them, as in this one, he returns as if from some archeological dig of the USA's collective history with the damnedest stories and characters. This time he has outdone even his own "Programmed to Kill" which also serves as this book's perfect companion as the material is related. So if you haven't yet read PtK, there is no better time than now.

Everyone knows about the Manson murders and the Family. We have all heard about how they had some connection to one or another of the Beach Boys. And while most people would stop there with a, "Hm. What a weird coincidence," Dave says, "Hold on just a sec." Then he shows you more. And that example is not even a good one. Dave will give you many better and far more obscure ones, and then explore their implications.

This book takes us back to the 60's (although we visit other periods as well), time of the Doors and The Byrds, the Beatles and Frank Zappa. The era of Fonda and Brando, Hopper and Dean. Also the Vietnam War (or was it police action?) and the CIA's most infamous abuses. Instead of just parroting the same old anecdotes, Dave traces the relationships between the Rock and Roll scene (especially that which started in Laurel Canyon), Hollywood's movie makers, and the intelligence community. And believe me, there are far too many of these connections to just dismiss them. He also explores the family trees of many of the 60s' biggest rock stars and actors and exposes a very interesting detail they all share. Along the way he notes and ties in death after strange death left in the wake of this scene as well as one coincidence after another. His research is impeccable and all from mainstream sources. It seems that the story this book tells was always there, it just took Dave to unearth it for us.

One thing is for sure: after reading this book, you will never look at the 1960's or its many famous people the same way. If you love Hendrix, The Doors, The Byrds, CSNY, Graham Nash, The Rolling Stones, The Mamas and the Papas, the Who, the Monkees (HA!), America, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Poco, the Beach Boys, and a host of others, and you want to know more about the inter-relationships between these bands and the CIA, etc. (Yes, there was one)then pick this book up. You won't regret it, but you might regret the fact that it kept you up far too late for just one more chapter.

Wake-up Call

I had read Mr. McGowan's online series, but the book adds substantially more information and is well written and nicely cited and edited. I read it over the weekend and could not put it down until it was done. I purchased three copies -- one for me to keep and two to be passed around.

There are many disturbing aspects to waking up to the reality of how our society and culture are manufactured and manipulated by the elites and their intelligence machinery, and one of the most disturbing is the obliteration of the myth of a meritocracy in which talented people who work hard at their craft are discovered and become rich and famous. As this book demonstrates, even in areas in which you would least expect it -- like rock 'n roll and "hippy" culture -- fame and fortune is mostly reserved for those already connected to the ruling elite. Buy several copies of this book, read it, and pass the copies on to likely readers and spreaders of the word.

When I review a book, a lions share of ...

When I review a book, a lions share of the stars is dedicated to content, not writing style. I gave this book 5 stars because it touched upon the artificial creation of an entire era and I'm sure subsequent era's to follow. It documented the way that social engineering is being used on society in order to lead them in a specific direction. As the hippie movement did. This experiment was used to break down the family structure and wear away at the moral fiber of society and was extremely successful in doing so. All you have to do is look around today, just take a look at us. It is a book that caused me to question why the people orchestrating that movement would want to do that???? These techniques of social engineering are ongoing. Those reviewers who are stuck on the writing style, are forever lost as far as I'm concerned. You obviously can not see the forest from the trees and have lost the entire point of McGowan's work. He isn't Shakespeare, he is trying to convey a very unsettling truth to the public. What you should be asking yourself is why?? Why did they want to create a social situation that would cause a break down in morality and family structure. That's the million dollar question and continues to be. All you have to do is look at the VMA Awards each year.

Mitton book review

I use this book primarily as a text book in my advanced rendering class. The presentation aspects are right-on, but some of the drawings are less than perfect. There are a few color plates in the middle that are really helpful as far as having good examples of illustration. I would recommend Doyle's Color Drawing for a book about actually rendering.
