About the Author

Laurence Greene, PhD, taught scientific writing and integrative physiology at the University of Colorado at Boulder from 1993 to 2009. With funding from the National Science Foundation and the CU-Boulder Faculty Teaching Excellence Program, Dr. Greene developed discipline-specific scientific writing courses for undergraduate and graduate students. In 2009, Dr. Greene left academia to practice what he had preached as a writing instructor. He is currently a scientific and medical writer in South Florida.

The book I've been waiting for

I teach a writing in biology class. I gave up years ago on other textbooks and have relied on worksheets and brief lectures to convey the points I want students to consider when writing a scientific research paper. This book is the answer to a prayer. It has all of the elements I've wanted in a textbook. I never thought I could fall in love with a textbook or reference book. I was wrong!

Rather than telling readers to "consider the audience" this book explains exactly what that means and gives specific examples. Other chapters talk about how to write to the readers' expectations, how to revise what you have written (at the global, paragraph and sentence levels), how to analyze why you are writing (usually it is not to prove you did your homework), how to build a convincing argument that deals with contradictory information, and how to avoid plagiarism and cite properly.

I'll absolutely be adopting this book for my class. As I delve more deeply into the text, I find myself nodding in agreement with the author and exclaiming "Yes!" out loud. This book is written for writers who are not necessarily English majors. You won't find long passages on grammatical rules. Rather, this book is a guide to the thought process that leads to effective writing. It's useful to read through it carefully and then refer back to specific chapters as needed. I wish I'd had access to this text when writing my own dissertation years ago. But you don't need to be a graduate student to benefit. Anyone from high school onward would find this text valuable.

Best of all, it's relatively inexpensive, making it accessible to anyone who is writing about science. This is well worth the investment because the content is timeless. By focusing on the process and not the product, the author has written a book that is going to be referred to for decades to come.

About the Author

Leanne F. Alarid is associate professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Texas-San Antonio.  From 1996-2006, she taught at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.  While at UMKC, she received a faculty scholar award for excellence in research.  She earned her M.A. in criminal justice/criminology and her Ph.D. in criminal justice, both from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.  She double majored with a B.A. in psychology and sociology from the University of Northern Colorado.

 

Dr. Alarid's areas of expertise are institutional and community corrections, women and crime, and criminal justice policy.  She is the author of over 20 journal articles and book chapters.  She most recently co-authored Community-Based Corrections, 7e.  She co-edited four books, including In Her Own Words:  Women's Offenders' Views on Crime and Victimization; Behind a Convict's Eyes:  Doing Time in a Modern Day Prison; Correctional Perspectives:  Views from Academics, Practitioners, and Prisoners; and Controversies in Criminal Justice.

 

Alarid worked as a counselor for a girls' group home and as a correctional case manager at an adult halfway house, both in Denver, Colorado.

 

 

Philip Reichel is a tenured full professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Northern Colorado, where he has been since 1983. He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in sociology from Kansas State University and his B.S. degree in sociology from Nebraska Wesleyan University. Prior to beginning his teaching career, Dr. Reichel worked as a counselor at the Nebraska Penal and Correctional Complex (now the Nebraska State Penitentiary) in Lincoln.

 

During his more than 30 years in academia, Dr. Reichel has received awards for his teaching, advising, service, and scholarship. Especially notable among those were his university's Distinguished Scholar award in 2003 and his selection in 2005 by the student council as Advisor of the Year. He is the author of Comparative Criminal Justice Systems: A Topical Approach (2005, Prentice Hall); editor of the Handbook of Transnational Crime and Justice (2005, Sage Publications); has authored or co-authored more than thirty articles, book chapters, and encyclopedia entries. His areas of expertise include corrections, comparative justice systems, and transnational crime. He is active in both the American Society of Criminology and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, where he recently served as Chair of the International Section.

I wasn't sure if this book was going to be like a lot of other books that promise the world and deliver NOTHING!
I hit a slump and wasn't able to close many deals for several weeks. No matter what I tried I wasn't closing any deals! Something had to change.
Saw this book and it was my life saver! Once I started reading the book I could not put it down. Went to work, applied the principles of the book and BAM--CLOSED THE DEAL! Not only did I close the first deal after reading the book but several others. I am well on my way to closing 99% just as the book said!
This book has really changed my life! My boss is also extremely happy!

Excellent Review Manual!

This manual left me more than prepared for the SOA P exam. Lots of practice tests included complete with in-depth solutions for every problem. A lot of the concepts in the later practice exams never appeared on the actual exam, but I felt very at ease when faced with the real test. Overall I would definitely recommend this manual to anyone studying for the P exam.

This goes into more depth than you need for the exam. It was good to have so many problems to practice with but I felt that I wasted a large amount of time trying to figure out methods that I did not end up needing on the exam. I used the Actex "Probability for Risk Management" text which was extremely useful and the SOA practice problems. I passed the exam on the second try and I think if I had concentrated less on this manual and more on the SOA practice problems I could have passed the first time. If I had it to do over again I would look for another source containing a large pool of practice problems that better represent the exam.

About the Author
Susan Abulhawa was born to Palestinian refugees of the 1967 war. Currently living in Pennsylvania with her daughter, she is a human rights activist and frequent political commentator. Spellbinding

Once again, Susan Abulhawa has demonstrated her mastery of historic fiction as a literary art form. She consistently provides her characters with so much substance they become animated with lives of their own. Between Nazmiyeh and the Beekeeper lies a society and country that will grab your heart and soul. I found it impossible to put down as I began to visualize the story unfolding before me as though watching a film. In "The Blue Between Sky and Water", Abulhawa blurs the line between history and allegory (with a dose of the ethereal and supernatural). A must read for anyone who appreciates (or wants to know) the beauty and culture of all that was and is Palestine, or; for those who are merely seeking to be entertained. Either way, you will not be disappointed.

A powerful beautifully written novel about a Palestinian family expelled from their ancestral village of Beit Daras. They become refugees living in Gaza. One of the reasons that makes this novel so special for me is the fact that it is told by a gifted, intelligent, brave, and talented Palestinian author/ writer. For me, it is extremely important that our narratives be told by us Palestinians and Susan continues to do so in an amazing truthful way. Her first OUTSTANDING novel, "Mornings in Jenin" will always have a special place in my heart! The "Blue Between Sky and Water" is also an extraordinary piece of work and I will be looking forward for her next novel. Susan Abulhawa is simply what I like to call a "PALESTINIAN FREEDOM WRITER." ~ Tanya

One of my Top Books of 2015

I cannot say enough about this book. It sucked me in and wouldn’t let me free until I had read every page. This story of a family in Palestine, over the course of several generations, during the hostile takeover of Gaza by Israel, provided a very intimate look at what it was & still is like for the Palestinians in that part of the world. To be almost a prisoner in your own country and to suffer through some of the humility (being strip searched before visiting an imprisoned family member) or lack of proper amenities that each and every human being should have access to.
There were times that I laughed and cried for this family that spanned four generations and, at times, different parts of the world.
I am disappointed to learn of some of the terrible things that the refugee’s suffered through at the hands of the Jews. There was rape, physical harm, murder, and imprisonment. All experienced by this one family. I admired the women for their strength and enjoyed some of the supernatural additions to this book.
The characters, particularly Nazmiyeh, the matriarch of the family, were entertaining and thought provoking. There was Nur, who was separated from her family, and Khaled, who put together the missing pieces of their family puzzle, the beekeeper’s wife who also played a matriarch role without having any biological children of her own, and so many more characters you will get to know and love throughout this story.
The family unity and strong love help them survive the toughest of times. I highly recommend this book and will be passing along my copy for others to enjoy.

About the Author

Joel Karsten developed the straw bale gardening method more than ten years ago. As interest grew, he became one of the most in-demand garden lecturers in the country. A pioneer and an entrepreneur, he has been featured in the New York Times, national television and radio, and dozens of other major media outlets. He has a degree in horticulture form the University of Minnesota and currently resides in Roseville, Minnesota.

Results Beyond My Highest Expectations!

The reviews here seem to be mostly "plan to, want to, expect to".

I'll make this short and sweet...I put in two bales this year as a trial and the results were not good...there were incredibly good!!!

I put in four tomatoes, three peppers, a zucchini, and a lemon cucumber on two bales, consciously trying to stress the concept to see what it would deliver.

I will never garden any other way! The plants all grew rapidly and have been exuberantly productive. In addition, for the first time in 25 years living in this location (San Francisco Peninsula), I have not had to fight the slugs and snails! One tried to climb the bale but gave up. What a relief to be freed of that struggle.

We're waiting for the huge crop of tomatoes to ripen while we harvest zucchini, cucumbers, and peppers.

I wholeheartedly recommend Mr. Karsten's book!

30 years of gardening and now making changes

This book has revolutionized how I garden. I have a 40x14 foot greenhouse and extensive outdoor gardens. However, I live high in the Rocky Mountains and my soil is nothing more than crushed shale. It costs me an arm and a leg to haul in compost every year and since my property is all pasture I don't have the luxury of leaves for massive amounts of compost. I started using straw bales for part of my garden last summer and I was stunned. It was the best garden I've ever had here. And at the end of the season we moved the wet, partially composted bales to the flower gardens and let them compost over the winter. Because the inside of the bales is warm from all the compost I was able to start plants a full 30 days before the normal season, with the help of a frost blanket on cold nights. I've brought in all straw bales for this summer and have already planted my spring crop in the greenhouse. This summer I'm adding Azomite dust and fungus to the bales, along with red earth worms. I think I'll end up planting half of my gardens in straw bales each year. Then use the leftover, partially composted bales to enrich my poor soil so I'll be gardening half in amended soil and half in bales each year. It's less expensive than hauling in compost and MANY FEWER weeds!

Best Tomatoes we ever have grown

4 Months after getting the book I can say this method works great. We tried the straw bale and cannot belive the results so far in 2013.. we are in Minnesota and with tilled clay soil always had a uninspiring crop. A lot of fruit on the vine and hope they all ripen and taste great..TBD..The basel has the best we ever tatsed and so aromatic..Do recommend this process and are planning to expand for 2014
Oct 2 2013 UPDATE: This was the best veggie garden we have had. The only problem is that we had tried to many different plants in two straw bales.Crops that grew very tall ( Basel and tomatoes)overshadowed the smaller height plants like carrots and onions. We will extend the bales next year and have a section for smaller plants by themselves. Otherwise the plants liked the conditions. It is important to keep the watering up at ;east evry couple days.. For a first year experiment thumbs up..

This is the best introduction into speech sciences for linguistic students, especially for phoneticians. I wish I had such a book when I first struggled with technical writings on speech processing. Material is organized perfectly, style is clear, easy read. after reading this book it is possible to take amore advanced and more technical ones, e.g. by Jurafsky and Martin. Students who feel overt to math enjoyed the curse based on this book and joyfully played with C programs to modify the results. No woner if the book becomes a compulsory textbook for an introductory course on computational linguistics or speech processing at linguistic departments. I feel obliged to the author for the book. It is not a 5-star rating, of course, it is definitely higher. Many thanks to the publisher for evaluation copy.

One of a kind

John Coleman is an expert in his field, and he has produced the only introduction to this area for beginners. Aimed at linguists with no real expetise in computing, this is a must for anybody wanting to familiarise themselves with computational linguistics.

Further away in Edinburgh Scotland, high up in the Castle rock stands the big one o’clock gun- A big cannon that goes off regularly at one o’clock, every day, freezing people to the spot for a few moments, and rattling old people’s bones with the vibration it causes, whilst they also check their watches, and in the houses, all clocks are set the same way.
The gun resounds across the City of Edinburgh, and will be missed terribly if it does not go off. As we live with this kind of repetition, so our lives are dependent on the repetition of our heart beats. The day that beat stops forever, our lives are over, just as when the clocks stop, time stands still. One of Nostradamus’s predictions are about to come true. Andy is unaware of the disruption of those elements his watch is about to cause, and innocently shows it off to his friends in the park. The watch enjoys its new found freedom of not being cooped up in the Jeweler’s shop window and big changes are made to time.
Andy and his wife Amy Johnston live in an old Edinburgh City Tenement, above which the Castle looms. They rely each day on the one o’clock gun going off in the castle, even though the loud boom rocks the dishes on the kitchen shelf, and just about bursts their ear drums when it goes off, Edinburgh would not be the same without it.
So far time has passed over Nostradamus’s predictions, of life and the world coming to an end. Panic strikes in cities all over the United Kingdom, when suddenly, and unexpectedly, Big Ben begins losing time, and the one o clock gun in Edinburgh fires too soon. There must be a reason! All clocks begin to lose time or stop altogether. When people begin to keel over and die of obvious sudden and unexplained heart failure, panic takes hold. Andy and Amy eventually can’t take it anymore when their neighbours begin fighting because they don’t understand what is happening to them. They then decide to pack a few bags and travel to Amy’s sister Ellie who lives in the Northern Hebrides.
Andy has time to think when on the train, and eventually realizes the meaning of strange dreams he has been having, and discovers he has oracle powers. He actually had predicted the standing still of time, when he was a boy, and now it is all coming to light. No one understands why he becomes so attached to his watch, or why it does not stop as all other watches are now doing Neighbors gang up on him accusing him of some kind of lechery.
