In this illustrated, extended essay on the work by Rosler, Steve Edwards argues that although the critical attitude towards documentary is an important dimension of the piece, it does not exhaust the meaning of the project. Edwards situates the work in relation to debates and practices of the period, especially conceptual art and the emergence of the photo-text paradigm exemplified by the work of Robert Smithson, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Hans Haacke, Victor Burgin, and the Women and Work group. In particular, he contextualizes Rosler's work of this period within the politicized San Diego group (which included, in addition to Rosler, Allan Sekula, Fred Lonidier, and Philip Steinmetz). Krzysztof Sozański is an Associate Professor in the Electrical Engineering Institute at the University of Zielona Góra, Zielona Góra, Poland. His main research areas are: digital signal processing, digital signal processing in power electronics, realizations of advanced control algorithms using digital signal processors, programming of digital signal processors (DSP), software for microcontrollers and DSP, especially C language, Matlab, Pspice, Psim for simulation, and designing magnetic elements for power electronics.

Excellent coverage of the Armenian genocide issue and recovery efforts

An excellent book written by Prof. Stanly Kerr, Ph.D. who had an intimate knowledge of the horrors against the Christian population of Anatolia, Turkey (largely the area of Cilicia) comprising mainly ethnic Armenian, but also Assyrian, Greek, and Arab Christians startling in April 1915 and running into 1920 and a bit beyond.
Those Christians who were pressured into the religion developed by Mohammed were largely spared. Dr. Kerr headed the Near East Relief efforts and later was a professor at the near by American Univ. of Beirut (Lebanon) and developed close contacts with survivors of this first genocide of the 20th century. The contents of the book were validated by my wife's uncle, Dicran Berberian, M.D. of Albany, NY.
I purchased and read the book back in 1973 and again this season.

Well, I haven't read it yet but I was led to it by my interest in interviewing Steve Kerr, Coach of the NBA Champion Golden State Warriors basketball team. Stanley Kerr was the grandfather of Coach Kerr. Coach Kerr's father was gunned down in Beirut. Interestingly I have a special interest in the Armenians, as shown on my web site http://ralef.com/Haig

About the Author

Stephane Faroult first discovered relational databases and the SQL language back in 1983. He joined Oracle France in their early days (after a brief spell with IBM and a bout of teaching at the University of Ottawa) and soon developed an interest in performance and tuning topics. After leaving Oracle in 1988, he briefly tried to reform and did a bit of operational research, but after one year, he succumbed again to relational databases. He has been continuously performing database consultancy since then, and founded RoughSea Ltd in 1998.

Pascal L'Hermite has been working with relational databases in OLTP, production and development environments on Oracle Databases for the past 12 years and on Microsoft SQL Server for the past 5 years.

For some shops, THE book you need

I'm at odds with the first two reviewers, but I think it depends on what you're looking for. This book is NOT about classical tuning. Classical tuning is "tune the server", and "tune the query".

The emphasis - in the preface and the excellent Chapter 6 - is that the real gains are usually elsewhere, when you have older code.

I work with a 25 year heritage of fairly well written apps. Many of them have the described situation - a single query that's been broken into two or more parts, with an outer loop and (at least one) inner loop. When server memories were 64K, or 1 Meg, or 4 Meg, and CPU's only came in packages of 1, and disk channels were slow, and networks were slower, this was often the only practical way to get a result.

The interplay changed over the years, but the old code worked. In the past few years, with 64-bit processors, cheap 64-CPU servers, and multi-io disk channels, a wierd thing happened. We found that moving to newer systems and faster hardware made things run SLOWER.

The answer time and again was in those "split loop queries". If we turned them back into one big query - the kind that you couldn't run before, we would see performance improvements of hundreds or thousands of times. In the end, the math proved - on powerful machines, most of the overhead is sending the query, compiling it, and sending it back. If one monster query takes a full second, but every query in the loop takes 1/4 second - if that inner loop runs 1000 times, you lose.

Meantime, that 64-core machine has every CPU working full blast - recompiling the same stupid statement over and over! The problem is, you try to tell this to a developer, they don't beleive you "I didn't change anything in the code".

And that's what this book is about. Changing the code. This book validates what I've been trying to tell my managers and coders; I am grateful to Faoult and L'Hermite for showing I was not making this up myself.

The second reviewer is just reading the wrong book for whatever it is they are trying to do.

This is an essential book for certain people, and is certainly of no interest whatsoever for others. (If you don't own a 1941 Plymouth, the 1941 Plymouth manual isn't much use - otherwise, it's a must).

"The application design is the most important factor in performance"
I've heard the phrase so many times, it doesn't even register on me. Sure the application design is the most important factor in performance, but what do I do about it? Well, "Refactoring SQL Applications" (RSA) is the book I've been waiting for. RSA lays out examples of how application coders tend to think either procedurally or object oriented and how this thinking can completely miss the boat when it comes to writing SQL and interacting with databases.
In RSA, Stephane Faroult, lays out examples of Java code, user defined functions and views and how a coders notions of modular procedural programing and/or object instantiation can undermine database performance from cookie cutter reuse of code to table joins written in Java. If you've ever seen Tom Kyte's "Developer Super Session - The Best Way", then you know the best way is not to do it all and his example is coders doing "count(*)" to find out how many loops to do or how big an array to layout. Tom explains the disasters this can create and how the best way is just to not do the count(*) and how this works by letting the database do the work. Letting the database do the work is explained clearly and with many examples from different perspectives in "Refactoring SQL Applications".

I don't agree with the author's definition of 'refactoring'

Here is what I was looking for in a book and did not find here:
A set of SQL refactoring patterns - like what Martin Fowler offers in his book for oo languages.

I want to know stuff like:
How do i remove duplication in SQL.
How to make the code more readable/clear and decoupled
how do i change the structure of queries without changing the results.
how do i turn a set of subqueries with similar/same criteria into another structure

What I got instead
a book about tuning and performance improvements
a book about embedded sql app-dev refactoring

I'm moderately disappointed, but I think this book will give me some knowledge that may help me invent 'real' t-sql refactoring patterns.

Before I start this review let me say this....

I'm a big fan of Wendy Williams..., but I'm going to say it like I mean it.

I can close my eyes and just imagine the conversation between Wendy and her friends...

Friend #1: Girl... you should write a book. You give so much good advice on your show! It's a No-Brainer.

Well.... Maybe the conversation didn't go exactly like I typed but remember I said I was imagining the conversation.

Ask Wendy is basically The World According to Wendy Williams - you can watch her T.V. show for free. I'm not going to say the book was horrible, because there was some good, funny, and a few hell-to-naw advice in the book.

Love Of A Tiger

This is very different to our usual shifter stories. In this author's world these shifters started life as human. Then after a traumatic event shifted.
Caleb is a three hundred year old Bali tiger and the last of the kind in the world. He has been on a personal mission for many years to put as many poachers out of business as possible, one way or another.
Anastasia is a snow leopard in her thirties and works in animal conservation. They meet when they find themselves after the same group.
The timeline jumps about a bit, because in some places they are giving an interview to a reporter. Once you sort that out in your brain, you get dragged right in. It's a very sexy story with lots of scorching hot scenes. A very dangerous adventure in the jungle of Borneo. There is also quite a bit of time spent with them in animal form, some times having great fun, and other times fighting for their lives.
This has got to be part of a series that I will read more of.

Another must read book from A.E Grace!!

I loved this story about Anastasia a snow leopard and Caleb a Bali Tiger. Caleb is close to 300 yrs old where Ana is only in her late twenty's , so he knows a lot more about shifters and what their life's use to be like and how now there are very few shifters left. She works for an agency that goes after poachers and he goes after them on his own. They meet quite by accident , the chemistry between the is hot, and they both from the start feel like they've known each other their whole life's. They figure out they are after the same group of guys and team up to go after them.

The book is full of action , funny times, scary times and hot sex. But the hot sex doesn't rule the book, it's more about two people falling in love, getting to know each other, and working towards a common goal. I loved the book and could hardly put it down. Definitely a must read!!

LOVE THOSE CATS!!!!!

This is a must read that I thoroughly enjoyed. Ana, a snow leopard shifter, and Caleb, a Bali Tiger shifter, are both on a mission to save elephants from ivory hunters. It grabbed me from the first page and I couldn't put it down. Loved hearing from both Ana and Caleb's point of view. The chemistry between these two was hot. This story is full of suspense, non-stop action, some violence, fun and hot sex, with romance and love. Don't miss out on this one!!!
