Remarkably complete reference

I'm writing this review as an instructor of university courses on engineering geology / geomechanics. Bell's book is an authoritative, well-written reference on basic principles of engineering geology. Although it is not divided this way, there are essentially two main parts - which could be termed, respectively, Geologic Background, and Engineering Behavior. In the part on Geologic Background, aspects of geology most necessary for understanding engineering behavior of earth materials are well presented, insightful, and remarkably complete. Chapters in this part of the book include: igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, structure, discontinuities, groundwater and two chapters on geomorphological processes.
The second part has chapters dealing with engineering properties and behavior of soils and rocks. Some of this material might be unsatisfying to the civil engineer with a strong background in soil or rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering. Nevertheless, this part of the book is also very useful reading. The author's vast experience working with geological materials in an engineering context is evident in the narrative descriptions of materials types and material properties, which are packed with insights, examples, data and references. The book will remain highly relevant to the geotechnical fields for the foreseeable future. It covers necessary background for graduate students and professionals, but is too detailed for the needs of most engineering undergraduates.

While painting, Richard thoroughly teaches about color harmony, design, values, and how he departs from the photograph and borrows from other images to reach his goal. About the Author

Qiao Yun was born in Luanxian County, Hebei Province, and he graduated from Beijing Teachers College, where he majored in Chinese literature and Chinese history. He then joined China Architecture & Building Press, where he became a Senior Editor and Deputy Chief Editor. Since the early 1960s, Yun has been involved in writing and editing the History of Ancient Chinese Architecture and  Ancient Chinese Architecture. He was chief editor of Yuanmingyuan, editor of the Academic Periodical of Yuanmingyuan, and has published over 20 essays. He also wrote Walls and Towers, another volume of the Library of Ancient Chinese Architecture series. We stayed for ten years before returning home to take over the family floristry business from my parents.One day an advert in the local paper caught my eye: 'Foster Carers Wanted.' I knew straight away it was something I'd love to do. As a child I had a friend whose family took in foster children, and I had often asked my mother if we could do the same. She always said she was too busy with the shop, but after living a fast-paced life in London I felt I could easily manage to sell flowers and care for youngsters. Having a family was something Jonathan and I planned for the future; surely fostering was just like bringing up your own children, if not easier?Looking back, I was incredibly naïve. I was convinced fostering kids would be like caring for flowers: if we provided the right environment, nourished them well and treated them with love and respect, everything would be rosy. We could foster for a few years, and maybe even carry on when we started our own family. Of course, it wasn't like that at all! Each child had a unique set of problems, some incredibly sad, others very shocking. We found ourselves immersed in a care system we knew nothing about, yet soon found impossible to leave.I thrived on the challenge and rewards of being a foster mum, and when I discovered several years on that I was not able to have children of my own, I didn't miss a beat. By then I had trained as a specialist carer for teenagers with complex needs, and I have never looked back. Jonathan and I have fostered more than fifty children over the past twenty-seven years. I hope you will enjoy reading about some of the wonderful children we have been privileged to care for over the years.

It kept my attention to finish it, but the long passages where the author talks about herself were too frequent. Nice to read of a successful ending for such a resilient young person & while I very much appreciate understanding how the foster parent felt, etc - the author seemed to lay it on a bit thick regarding how intuitive and gifted she felt she was as a foster parent.

Stunning

This book held me spellbound throughout. Alice Pung writes with honesty and power without affectation. I learned a lot about the Pol Pot years and the description of her father's life during this time was haunting - it will stay with me. This book should be compulsory reading in all Australian schools. It would make the average Aussie wiser, more understanding and just kinder. It's not all grim. There were parts that made me laugh out loud - I loved the story of the laminator! I can't wait for the next Alice Pung offering.

A revelation on Cambodian revolution

I found the author writing in third person disconcerting in the flow of the story.

The information on the conditions in Cambodia during the Pol Pot regime vivid, educational and very disturbing. Very well written - I was engrossed.

The story starts of life in the suburbs of Melbourne - a bit dull and I nearly put the book aside a few times - glad I persevered, as the story of her father's life in Cambodia was an eye opener.
