Bummer. I've finished reading it already!!!!!

I purchased the first book in the series. I read it in a day. I purchased the 1-3 set available through Amazon and read that in a couple of days. Then I cooled my heels until Book 4 came out and ready that in 2 days. I'm so bummed I have to wait months or more for another installment!!!

I truly am enjoying this series. I find Angela's writing immersive. I feel like I am a part of Lana's life while reading these books. I am intrigued by the intricacies of the particulars like the different afterlife locations, for example. There is clearly a lot of thought behind each of the books and the "world" in general. I am looking forward to the next installment and hope that the series will continue beyond that for many many more books.

Thank you, Angela, for another thoroughly enjoyable read!

Fun Urban Fantasy Read!

This book is my favorite Lana book so far! I’ve been a fan of Roquet for awhile now, thought her writing good, but this book absolutely slayed me! The emotional energy in several of her scenes (I won’t give away spoilers, but let’s just say there’s some awesome fight scenes, a super tragic sex scene, and a death scene that broke my heart) was just amazing. I think it is pretty clear that Roquet’s writing is just getting better and better and I’m so glad I stuck with the series!

There is also some good development in characters that were mentioned/used before but didn’t get much screen time (I love Jack, the demon butler!) and I’m happy that Gabriel got a little bit of screen time, even though he’s all upstanding now. ;)

Keep those books coming, Ms. Roquet!

Psychopomp! The name alone is awesome!

My first review on amazon but this series demands one! Especially at the end of the book Roquet mentioned her frustration with writing. Don't ever give up on this!! The series is so refreshingly unique, I love all the characters and the plot is insane. The author has managed to bring together religion, deities, reapers and pissy souls into an adventure that I have fallen in love with. Each book shows great character development and this latest has me heartbroken, happy and pissed off all in one. But I'm okay with that because it doesn't follow any typical story line. It's unpredictable while staying true to the characters and world she's created. And we find out more about Grim! Yeah!

The complete guide to JAX-RS

If you have a fundamental grasp of Java and want to learn how to build REST services this book and some time is about all you need. It is a thoughtfully constructed guide, taking you from understanding REST through designing REST web services and into ever increasing depth of JAX-RS including deployment. There are two main sections dividing the theory and practical with resources available for download to get you started. I found the pace comfortable and enjoyed the book’s focus on applying JAX-RS to real world scenarios.

Flawed presentation

The first few chapters do a decent job of establishing context for the reader and introducing the basic principles. But after that, things begin to go downhill. Once he's past the fundamentals of the REST API, the author only casually mentions or largely glosses over many important details. I've programmed the servlet API and am familiar with deploying webapps on Tomcat, so it's not like I came to this completely cold. Nevertheless, I found the book repeatedly frustrating. Many points in the book I was only able to figure out by supplementing the text with both googling and trial and error—too much of both, really. The sad thing is that, while there is a lot to this API, none of it is rocket science.

The only reason I'm giving it 3 stars rather than 2 is because it is difficult to find this information anywhere else, and so the book, despite its faults, is of some value. But you don't spend the money being asked for programming books nowadays for this kind of aggravation. The author could have communicated the subject better, and so I'm going to guess the book could have benefited from more editorial guidance and more time allotted for revision.

A comprehensive coverage of JAX-RS

I was excited to read this book considering I use JAX-RS and RESTEasy at work. Another developer put together the foundation of our web services using these technologies and I wanted to better understand the core of what I work with each day. This book perfectly fit that need.

Many technical books are written by authors who have worked with the technology for a couple of years or, in some cases, learned it just for the sake of writing the book. This is NOT the case for RESTful Java with JAX-RS.The author, Bill Burke, is the main contributor to RESTEasy, a framework that makes working with JAX-RS, well, easy. You won't find a better resource for information on the subject.

The book starts with explaining what REST is and is not, along with its guiding principles. Through the first few chapters the reader is introduced to new concepts and assumes no previous knowledge of the technology. However, shortly after, you are plunged into the heart of the technology using examples of servlet and client side code. Some of the topics include HTTP Content Negotiation, Scaling (caching), Security, and the plethora of annotations that can be used.

Overall, I really liked the book. My only complaint would be that many of the source code examples were incomplete. I am one of those people who like to run each example to make sure I understand how things work. I'm guessing code was left out for the sake of brevity. That being said, as the title says, this is a comprehensive treatise on the subject. Given the incomplete source examples I would have given the book 4 stars, however the book does something well that many books don't, it serves as both an introduction and a long term reference.. If you are new to the technology, this is a great introduction to concepts and how things work. If you already know the topic but want a good reference resource to keep beside you, the book covers that too. You can't go wrong purchasing this book; 5 stars from me.

Great for Artists, not so great for jewelers

The good: This book has absolutely drop dead gorgeous illustrations of fine jewelry created using precious metals and precious stones.

The bad: The book is targeted primarily to those who have excellent drafting or drawing skills, with very little to no instruction provided in developing the skills needed to execute the concepts in the book.

The "artistic values" are presented as matter of fact axioms, with no support or explanation. In other words, this is not a "how to do it" book at all. It's a lovely presentation of jewelry design illustration, but there is no teaching here, and no hints on how the illustrations might be actually rendered in metal and stone.

Nice "idea book" for manufacturing fine jewelers who render metal from drawings, but of little to no value for small scale artist jewelers with no drawing skills who render pieces via improvisitory skills and spontaneous arrangement of physical objects.

It's a beautiful book but if you really want to learn to draw jewelry do not get this book unless you are an artist and can draw pretty much whatever you see.

Fabulous book for jewelry designers

This book doesn't explain how to paint with gouache or how to render 3D objects in perspective--if you're looking for that, you want this book: [...]. However if you are a designer looking for some great references for classic jewelry designs and a general idea of how to take a design from rough to finished rendering, this is a great book for that. Jewelry rendering is a dying skill and this book is a great example of why it should still be taught!
