Helpful Resource

I was trained to read Greek in a seminary setting, so I have about 4 or 5 years of Koine. I picked this book up to work through the transition from Koine to Classical Greek, and I found it super helpful for a couple of reasons: (1) the readings are broken up into about 33 very manageable segments, (2) lots of vocabulary words are given to the reader on the page (I found myself still needing to look up words, but since I learned a completely different dialect, my vocabulary is pretty small), and finally (3) grammatical and syntactical notes are provided on the bottom of the page. I recommend trying to work through the syntax yourself before you avail yourself of the notes, since it will 'give the answers away.'
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone switching from Koine to Classical, as well as to the early-intermediate Greek student.

No Apologies for Plato's Apology

Paul Miller and Charles Platter offer an excellent text for the student translator. After the student has taken four semesters of Greek, in theory, the student should be able to read a Greek text. With something like 127 pages, and maybe five lines of Greek to each page, the diligent student could within ninety days translatie the text in an effort to reinforce vocabulary and Greek Grammar. This book will provide a summary of grammatical points where needed, as well as a running vocabulary for each section. The student attempting a translation will no doubt compare the amateur with the professional and soon learn that the amateur translator need be embarassed or disconcerted at their effort. Miller and Platter offer synopsis of background information so the student understands The Apology in context. While classical Greek is daunting, there is no reason for the student who wants to reinforce learning not try their hand at translating; such an attempt opens a wealth of linguistic information. Not the least of which, idioms, that we think are so modern, turn out to be as old as the hills. For example, δαιμων to Plato strongly suggested conscience, a person's alter ego weighing an action's rightness or wrongness; a God within--as D. H. Lawrence might say. (page 190/191) So this text would be helpful to the student translator.

It should probably be made abundantly clear that this is an untranslated version of the Apology of Socrates. There was no mention of this anywhere in the product description that the work was still it its original ancient Greek. Just a small but important piece of information.
