Great recent book on the topic

I'm new to synth and I am eagerly looking for beginner's books and other instructions. Yet it seems like most of the good books on analogue synthesizers are from the '80s. Nothing wrong with that but (1) some of the explanations are really dated (tape anyone?) which is distracting and (2) the best ones are hard to find and expensive, even as second hand books.
The synthesizer cookbook is a great recent tutorial on how to program a synth. It is divided in 3 sections, the first one explains the components (LFO, filters, etc.), the second one is a step-by-step tutorial on how to program a few patches. The last (and largest) section is a patch book with a huge selection to get you started. The patches are generic and can be adapted to any 2 oscillator synth so the book works with any brand, I have not tried all the patches but those I tried I eventually got them to sound good.
The CD however is a bit of a letdown. You get calibration files, an album by the author, some software and an odd "kitchen" percussion kit. Okay but recordings of the steps to follow in the tutorial would have been more helpful. Also the author explains that different synths play the patches differently... As a beginner I don't have access to that many synth and sonic illustrations would have been welcomed as well.
Anyway the book is really useful, it's clearly written and I can recommend it for beginners.
One last note: you're ordering directly from the author (it's self-published) and yet my copy delivered to Belgium promptly.

Great book.

This book covers most of the stuff you get up to a 400 level electronic music course (helped me get through one) without the tedious (and often painful to listen to) history of (mostly bad) early electronic music.

All the basic info on what all those knobs on your VST's and FL Studio and (insert softsynth) do is here. Patches are useful and great for training your ear to identify the basic waveforms so when you hear a synth you go "oh, a detuned sawtooth lead. Sounds like a little portamento and delay". If that's the kind of thing you want to be able to do then get the book.

If your thinking about getting it because you think that the presets are going to be the holy grail of synth sounds, well, get it anyway. After your initial disapointment, eventually curiosity will creep up on you and you'll read (the very digestable) early sections in small bites to learn some theory, then you'll try some of the presets and you'll get hooked on making the sounds you hear, but "better" (at least to you).

I think that's kind of the point to this book. Getting you close enough to the sounds you hear in songs you like that you go "is that all that is?" or "is that what you call that?"

To be honest I haven't tried the sound analysis technique yet, looks interesting but I got a lot to work on in just from the first section (theory of programming and effects etc.) and the last section on patches.

The bursting of the speculative dot.com bubble, slowing US growth, and the global financial crisis and its aftermath, however, have led to radical changes in Americans' perceptions of the benefits of global trade. Many Americans believe that trade with emerging-market economies is the most important reason for US job loss, especially in manufacturing, is detrimental to American welfare and an important source of wage inequality. Several prominent economists have reinforced these public concerns. In this study, Lawrence Edwards and Robert Z. Lawrence confront these fears through an extensive survey of the empirical literature and in depth analyses of the evidence. Their conclusions contradict several popular theories about the negative impact of US trade with developing countries. They find considerable evidence that while adjusting to foreign economic growth does present America with challenges, growth in emerging-market economies is in America's economic interest. It is hard, of course, for Americans to become used to a world in which the preponderance of economic activity is located in Asia. But one of America s great strengths is its adaptability. And if it does adapt, the American economy can be buoyed by that rising tide.

Surprise: American production workers do not compete with Chinese imports.

American manufacturing companies do not compete with Chinese and other exporters from developing countries in the US market. This is the conclusion of two very competent and experienced economists. This conclusion differs from Paul Krugman and Paul Samuelson. They claimed that exports from developing countries had a negative effect on the balance of trade and employment, which appears plausible.
The authors arrived at their conclusions by going into immense detail using rigorous analytical methods. It included comparing what companies in 470 different US industry categories produced in the USA and what was imported in their fields from developing countries. They conclude that import from developing countries is not a major or significant cause in the USA of (1) high unemployment (2) lost sales of US producers at home and in their exports (3) a reduction of low skilled high level paying jobs (competition from Japan and Germany did), (4) recessions (5) an increase in economic inequality. The reason is a very simple one. The US companies are not producing in substantial volumes labor-intensive low skill products. The competitors are companies in other developed countries like Toyota and Airbus.
At one point it was thought that China was exporting a large volume of high tech products like computers and peripherals from developing countries. Detail analysis again proved that this was not the case as the high value components are produced in developed counties, with the US in the lead.
Surprisingly the US terms of trade with developing countries have been improving.
It is true that there are instances where trade with developing countries has caused displacement of jobs and depressed wages in some industries, locations and occupations. However import from developing countries is not an important cause.
The authors found that GDP/Capita is a good indicator of what a country produces. Developing counties become competitors of developing countries when their average GDP per person reaches 70% of developed countries, which according do the authors will still take more than 15 years.
Do not forget that this book is about manufacturing that represents in 2010 only 10% of employment. It shrank from 25% in 1973 t0 10% in 2010, the reasons being, productivity increases and that people are spending spent less on goods and more on services. This decline is very similar in other developed countries. Also do not forget that the importation of petroleum products is the major source of the USA negative balance of trade.
The overall goal of the USA, as the authors see it, is a transition of the US becoming a self -sustaining economy that is less reliant on government stimulus and foreign borrowing, more reliant on private activity financed by increased domestic savings. The final chapter recommends policies on how to make this transition. Restricting import from developing countries is a wrong policy.

A lot of typos but I think its worth the money. A good tutorial on VHDL.

Not a bad tutorial for the price. I've kindof breezed threw it and I'm just now sitting down to try some of the examples. Its a little hard to read sometimes because of the typos. The chapter on functions and procedures is almost unreadable. As is the case with trying to read a Kindle, you can never see the illustrations good and the code examples have the comments going onto the next line. I'll give it a 4-star.

not quite ready for prime time

so i would say, they are cheap in price and informative, but really embarrassing in its errors - one almost wonders if the people that actually produced the book understand english. i'm glad i have them. for example, i was reading the parietal lobe text at a coffee shop, which i could never do with most neuroscience texts. but i think most people would find the quality of the production irritating.

so, it's a mixed bag. it depends on what you are seeking. for me, at the price, it is like ripping apart a monolithic text, and being able to carry small pieces around that are not deep but broad. hopefully that makes sense. i read these books as self-study, and have at least 4 different neuroscience text books, and find each has their strengths and weaknesses. if you only buy one neuroscience book, i would not recommend these puppies. but as auxiliary they are fun to have.

Extremely Informative Book for those Who Need to Understand!

I purchased this book when it first appeared on Amazon. At that time it was nowhere near the explanatory & informative resource that it is today. While it contains references to a great deal of medical terminology, those with a laymen's understanding of the subject matter can still benefit greatly from the research and knowledge it contains. This is done through an intense interest in the information which creates high motivation for comprehension ( for whatever reason). My interest results from the need to understand for personal reasons related to my child. This book, and others by the author, have been a highly important part of my need to learn more in each area. Thank you to R. Joseph for writing and publishing!!!
