It was their refusal, Luns said, that actually forced the Dutch out of New Guinea. When Kennedy and Sukarno in 1963 resolved to work together, US foreign policy threatened to disrupt -- unwittingly -- Dulles' own Cold War strategy which was focused on Indonesia. JFK's wariness, after Allen Dulles' role in the Bay of Pigs, drew a tongue-in-cheek but prophetic comment: 'Domestic policy can only defeat us', he used to say. 'Foreign policy can kill us'.

What a fascinating read! the incredible depths the author has gone to over a period of time really require a second read of this well annotated book.the corruption which is exposed is certainly unlikely to be known to many people and I found it to be a document I certainly could not put down. So much the wiser for having read it and so enlightened.

A good first edition, could use a facelift

It is pretty good. Some chapters excellent, some need some work to be more clear and readable for the general scientific reader who works with rats day-to-day. For instance, the chapter on Strains is very theoretical, starting with hardy-weinberg equilibrium concepts, rather than a nice simple delineation of....strains! Which is not to be found anywhere in the book. Very strange. Would be nice to have a simple description of sprague dawley versus wistar versus (etc). Also, it is very odd that they don't have a chapter on auditory behavior, while they have one on vision. Rats are stronger in the auditory than visual modalities...They are nocturnal and not the most visually astute beings in the world. But some of the chapters are pretty good, so it belongs in your library if you work on the behavior of rats.

To his surprise, Washington Post reporter Kessler was allowed to interview FBI counterintelligence agents and observe them at work. ("I later found out that the approval to give me so much access had all been a mistake.") His absorbing report focuses on the members of one FBI counterspy team called CI3 and their highly successful operations. Kessler also interviewed several convicted American spies, providing "the inside story from the traitor's point of view." In another piece of good luck, he was able to spend five days with one of the most successful spies in history on his home ground of Czechoslovakia: Karl Koecher, who operated inside the CIA for 20 years, was arrested by the FBI in 1984 and released two years later in a prisoner-exchange for Soviet dissident Anatoly Shcharansky. There is sensational material here, including Koecher's account of spouse-swapping parties attended by CIA employees, but most impressive are the author's revelations of FBI counterintelligence methods. Great stories from the cloak-and-dagger world.

Hard-hitting. A cutting look at the personalities behind the legends of counter-espionage. Very interesting when compared to "Spy Chaser" by MI6 veteran Peter Wright. The secret world of counter-espionage and the never-ending "mole hunts" are dizzying. I also recommend "Sell Out." It's the story of Aldrich Ames, perhaps the Soviets' greatest cold-war spy in America.

I always enjoy Kessler's writing and this book is no disappointment. Even though the cases described are a bit dated they still get the job done; give the readers a peek inside an otherwise closed world.

A fun read for any Tina Turner fan

This book is really interesting if you are a fan of Tina's (especially if you have read "I, Tina" or Ike Turner's "Takin' Back My Name"). What makes this book such a fun read is that it is written by someone who was with Tina from her days with Ike in the 70's, through the hard times after her split with him, and then right on up until she was about to become the superstar we know today - in many ways the most pivotol days of her career.
The book is surprising in that it talks less of the records Tina was releasing over these years than it does of her lovers, her moods, her friends and her relationship with her family.
The author met Tina when began a fan club for Ike & Tina in the 60's and throughout the years cultivated a friendship and business relationship with her as her personal assistant. He portrays a Tina we have only caught glimpses of before - Tina the shopper, Tina the perfectionist, Tina the party girl - but throughout it all always also shows a woman whose feet were on the ground and loyalties were strong.
One could argue that because Eddy Armani is such an admirerer of Tina's that the tone of the book paints her in the most flattering light - but it is still a juicy read chock full o' celebrities, scandal, sex and all of the trappings the you'd expect of a rock n' roll legend.
I found this book really enjoyable.

Good read, but you gotta wonder...

I know this guy had to be close to Tina-but you really gotta wonder with these kind of books, what is true and what isn't. Some facts don't really line up. He says he made Tina her first big wig and she wore it the night of the PRIVATE DANCER Tour that made it onto tape. Well, I had seen her well before that with the big wig. And it also says she opened for the Stones on their STEEL WHEELS tour...she didn't. That was in 1989, I believe he meant back in 80 81.

I'd just like to express my extreme disgust at the majority of the content of this frivilous book. Mr. "Armani" paints a picture of Tina that is growingly self-centered, manipulative and cold, which is precisely the opposite of "The Real T". He does a relatively good job at expressing his convictions and in trying to convince the reader of this, but, herein lies the key word "Trying". He certainly has not convinced me, nor will he. Anybody with half a brain knows that this guy is out to make money off of his 'idol'. Talk about hypocracy! Not only does he share with the entire world all of her most private and personal experiences, but he adamantly states that he would never "hurt or embarrass" her...hmmmm...I wonder what he considers this book to be doing....

Writers talk about trying to understand something in what they do, but few are as clueless as I was in setting out to try to understand gameworlds and what they mean to people I know and love and who play and study games.  To do so, of course, involved a journey into my own unknowingness, one that risks seeming foolish, lost, and even more clueless.

The journey was a good one for me but I emerged dazed and uncertain and reached out to a group of what might be thought of as spirit guides whom I knew would honestly tell me whether where I had gone were places they recognized and whether what I thought I had come to understand was "real." Thus the people whose words appear in the preface and on the cover as blurbs are something more than the usual collection of names one seeks in hopes of promoting a book (although they are extraordinary figures and truly what one means by "names" in the marketing sense). I've learned from each of them over the years. Also  I have Kass Fleisher and Joe Amato, both gifted and courageous writers themselves, to thank for their long friendship and efforts here. I am honored to be among the first authors of Steerage, their important venture into a sea of stories.

A Masterful Game of Cards

As Michael Joyce's remarkable novel Disappearance unfolds you get the sensation that multiple dealers are shuffling various decks of cards and laying them out on different card tables at different points in time. In this labyrinthine casino (that opens with a spin of fortune's wheel) you will encounter dealers, those who are dealt, and those who are dealt with. Does a single dealer control the outcome of the game? Is the dealer a composite of dealers, each with a different agenda? At one point the enigmatic gamer Candido cautions the perplexed wayfarer Mr. Dee (the pilgrim who progresses through the shuffled worlds), "You are not seeing what you believe you are seeing ... You can't trust your senses in any of this." Which is one of many intriguing reasons you won't stop reading once you begin.
