About the Author
Edmundo Desnoes is a Cuban author of novels and numerous critical and literary essays. He has taught at several American univeristies and was a Montgomery Fellow at Dartmouth College.

Is the revolution successful?

I was a little puzzled why this book was suggested for the lecture series I was taking. But when the ambiguity of the revolution I sensed from the story was explained, I was very happy I had read it, as the book actually opened up a "space" for Cubans to evaluate the "success" of the revolution.

Verbal whirlpool

"Memories of Underdevelopment" is not the critique of Castro's economic program that I expected from my ignorant reading of the title; it is a remarkably written, complex adventure through the soul of man living through a unique and challenging time. The brilliantly crafted words and sentences are much more than artifacts of writing talent, they serve as a verbal whirlpool to connect the reader with the narrator, and carry us through the struggles of living to face the starkness of imminent death.
What a way to experience the Cuban Missile Crisis almost a half a century later.

I thought this was a book about Cuba-to some extent anyway. I couldn't wait to finish it. Don't waste your $ on this thing.
