Practical tool to learn the everyday language
By Alain Laferriere
Based on Mr. Kraus' personal experience in integrating the Quebec culture, this book is a rich source of useful information for anyone interested in increasing their ability to understand and communicate in the dialect used by the population.

A fun read, but it could have been a lot better
By Amazon Customer
I think it's OK - there's some funny stuff in here, but there are some things I wish were different.
1) Although there is a pronunciation guide at the beginning of the book, I would have liked the terms and examples to be written out phonetically - like in the Lonely Planet language guides. This book could have even used IPA symbols after each word to show how to pronounce them, like in most dictionaries. That would have made it a lot easier to pronounce the words and phrases instead of constantly having to refer to the front of the book to make sure you pronounced the words right.
2) I felt like much of the content consisted of swear words and insults. I don't talk like this in English, therefore I'm fairly confident I won't be speaking like this in French either. While some of it was funny, what I really wanted from this book was to become better at communicating in Quebec French, not to have a potty-mouth in another language.
3) I felt like this book hadn't been properly proofread. For example, the word 'face' is listed as a feminine noun, yet in the example they give: "avoir un face de boeuf", the word is masculine. The word 'ça' is sometimes written with a cedilla, but often without. These inconsistencies make me question the accuracy of what I'm reading. I also wondered whether or not some of the terms and expressions in this book are outdated. Also, the formatting seemed a bit off. Usually, defined words in a dictionary are bold, but not capitalized unless it's a proper noun. In this book, every defined word in the dictionary was capitalized. I know it seems like I'm splitting hairs, but I found the format somewhat jarring. I just wasn't accustomed to it.
4) There were some words in the book that I felt sorely needed an example of usage, such as 'compagnie' - which is defined as 'company'. But in what sense? 'Company', as in a group of people or guests? Or 'company' as a place where you work? Or could I use this word in both instances? This book doesn't specify which definition of 'company' it is defining. There were many examples like this in the book.
5) As a bonus, (though not necessary), I also would have liked to see the European French (International French) counterpart listed alongside the Quebec term. For example: mitaine (Qu. Fr.) and moufle (Intl. Fr.) so that I can see how the two compare.
